Jennifer Lackey started in 2011 the way a lot of resellers do — combing Goodwill for things she could flip on eBay, then Poshmark. She noticed Poshmark worked a lot like Instagram, back when Instagram was still photos of your breakfast, and started selling clothes there before boutiques had discovered it. Her own online boutique grew to 40,000 followers.
Other owners kept asking how. So she sat in her Dallas apartment with a camera and recorded everything she knew. That first course sold to about a thousand boutique owners, and she opened a Facebook group to keep them together. Across her flagship group — InstantBoss Small Shop & Boutique Owners Connect — plus her membership, wholesale community and a 17,000-subscriber email list, she now reaches close to 200,000 boutique owners. Her shopper-facing channels — led by Swipetique’s 336,000-follower Instagram and 126,300-member Facebook group — add more than 460,000 customers.
InstantBoss today is a membership rather than a course: social media training across every platform, successful boutique mentors, content calendars, copy-and-paste content, branding and photography. Swipetique, her marketplace side, puts boutique products in front of shoppers who are already there and ready to buy. She also runs the wholesale side, connecting USA brands to tens of thousands of boutique buyers.
She works two days a week, when the nanny comes. Three kids — two boys, 7 and 5, and a baby girl — come before all of it.
